Duties of a Chaplain 

In the Marketplace

A Marketplace Chaplain provides spiritual care, encouragement, and ethical support to employees, business owners, managers, and others within a workplace or professional environment. The chaplain serves as a ministry of presence, respecting the beliefs and rights of everyone while providing faith-based support when requested or appropriately authorized.

1. Ministry of Presence

  • Be visibly available to employees and personnel who need spiritual or emotional support.
  • Build relationships based on trust, respect, compassion, and integrity.
  • Be present during times of workplace transition, crisis, loss, or difficulty.
  • Demonstrate Christlike character through conduct and service.

Scripture: “Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.” — Romans 12:15

2. Spiritual Care and Counseling

  • Listen to employees who are experiencing personal, family, spiritual, or workplace challenges.
  • Provide prayer and biblical encouragement when requested.
  • Offer appropriate pastoral counseling within the chaplain's training and competence.
  • Refer individuals to qualified professionals when their needs exceed the chaplain's scope.

3. Prayer Ministry

  • Pray with employees who voluntarily request prayer.
  • Conduct authorized workplace prayer gatherings or devotional activities.
  • Maintain sensitivity to employees who do not participate in religious activities.
  • Never use prayer as a means of coercion or workplace pressure.

Scripture: “Pray without ceasing.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:17

4. Crisis and Bereavement Support

A marketplace chaplain may assist during:

  • Death of an employee or family member
  • Serious illness
  • Workplace accidents
  • Natural disasters
  • Organizational crises
  • Traumatic events
  • Employee emergencies
  • Grief and bereavement

The chaplain provides compassionate presence, prayer when requested, and appropriate referrals.

5. Employee and Family Support

  • Provide pastoral support concerning family difficulties.
  • Encourage healthy communication and reconciliation.
  • Support employees experiencing grief, separation, divorce, or major life transitions.
  • Provide information about appropriate community resources when necessary.

6. Ethical and Moral Encouragement

  • Encourage honesty, integrity, accountability, and responsible decision-making.
  • Promote ethical conduct consistent with biblical principles.
  • Encourage employees to treat coworkers, customers, supervisors, and subordinates with dignity and respect.

7. Conflict Support

  • Listen impartially to individuals experiencing workplace conflict.
  • Encourage respectful communication.
  • Promote forgiveness, reconciliation, and constructive resolution when appropriate.
  • Avoid taking sides in employment disputes.
  • Refer formal workplace complaints to the appropriate HR or management personnel.

8. Spiritual Development

When authorized by the organization, a chaplain may:

  • Conduct Bible studies.
  • Facilitate devotional meetings.
  • Organize voluntary prayer gatherings.
  • Provide faith-based educational programs.
  • Encourage spiritual growth and personal development.

9. Leadership Support

  • Provide pastoral encouragement to business owners, executives, supervisors, and managers.
  • Offer confidential spiritual support when appropriate.
  • Encourage servant leadership, integrity, compassion, and accountability.
  • Support leaders during organizational challenges and difficult transitions.

10. Community Outreach

  • Connect employees and families with appropriate churches, ministries, nonprofits, and community resources.
  • Participate in authorized community service initiatives.
  • Assist with charitable and humanitarian activities.
  • Encourage employees to serve their communities.

11. Cultural and Religious Respect

A marketplace chaplain should:

  • Respect religious, cultural, and personal differences.
  • Never discriminate based on religious beliefs or nonbelief.
  • Provide spiritual care according to the individual's wishes.
  • Avoid imposing religious beliefs upon employees.
  • Understand that marketplace ministry must operate within applicable workplace policies and laws.

12. Confidentiality and Professional Boundaries

  • Protect private conversations to the extent permitted by law and applicable organizational policies.
  • Explain the limits of confidentiality when necessary.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Never exploit confidential information for personal, financial, or ministerial advantage.
  • Follow applicable reporting obligations and organizational procedures.

13. Referral and Resource Coordination

A chaplain should recognize when an issue requires specialized assistance and refer individuals to:

  • Licensed mental-health professionals
  • Medical professionals
  • Financial counselors
  • Legal professionals
  • Domestic-violence resources
  • Social-service agencies
  • Human Resources
  • Pastors or other clergy
  • Emergency services

14. Documentation and Accountability

Where required by the organization, the chaplain should:

  • Maintain appropriate ministry records.
  • Document authorized visits and activities.
  • Follow workplace security and access procedures.
  • Complete required training.
  • Maintain required credentials and continuing education.
  • Report incidents according to organizational policy.

The marketplace chaplain should model:

RELIGIOUS NAME AND MODIFIER STATEMENT

FLORIDA THEOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY, INC.

The institution uses the name Florida Theological University to identify its religious and theological character.

The word “Theological” communicates that the institution’s educational purpose is centered upon theological and religious studies.

The institution shall ensure that the official name and program representations accurately communicate its religious character.

FLORIDA THEOLOGICAL CHAPLAINCY ACADEMY, INC.

The institution uses the name Florida Theological Chaplaincy Academy to identify its religious, theological, and chaplaincy-focused educational purpose.

The words “Theological” and “Chaplaincy” communicate the religious and faith-based nature of the Institution’s programs.

Florida Theological Chaplaincy Academy Certification 

Chaplaincy certifications are offered through recognized chaplaincy and ministry organizations and are designed to acknowledge that an individual has successfully completed specialized training and demonstrated competency within the field of chaplaincy.

Certification may be granted by governmental agencies, professional associations, educational institutions, religious organizations, and credentialing bodies.

Certification serves to:
